What is Wifi and Wimax? Its clear difference.
WiMAX (stand for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) a wireless digital communications system, is the solution for slow or poor Internet connection. It is similar to Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) but the difference is the speed and location. In Wi-fi, you can only access Internet when there is a “Line of sight” or a strong signal from a wireless transmitter commonly known as “Hotspot”. While in WiMAx ( it is a “non-line of sight”) meaning, you can access Internet anywhere regardless of location, the area of signal coverage is far more wider and the bandwith is more impressive.
Impact of Wimax in 3rd World Countries such as the Philippines
I think that 3rd world Countries are ready to implement this Technology. The sad truth why Telecommunication Companies do not like to launch this Technology in this present time is because they are still protecting their Investment from the existing System that major shift might be a risk and not to mention the Governing Laws covering its scope.
I’ve known this technology back in 2004, when i was still a student of Electronics Engineering. This 2009, I hope that our Telecommunication Giants (Smart, Globe, Sun Cellular) are ready for this major upgrade and will implement this soon specially this Year. Philippines is a 3rd world country but i think Filipinos are waiting and ready to embrace this Technology implemented in developed Countries.
Current max speed of Broadband in Manila is 12 Mbps, only few are enjoying this fast and expensive Bandwidth. If Wimax is already here, Telecommunication companies controlling its use should not base their subscription price from the existing expensive Broadband speed because its a different Technology.
